Introduction

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Chung Cheng University was founded in August 1991 with its Graduate Institute, and became a full-fledged department with establishment of its undergraduate program two years later in August 1993. It currently has a faculty of 24 members and about 390 undergraduate students, 183 M.S. students, and 84 Ph.D. students.

Balanced Education on Fundamentals and Applications. Reflecting the fact that a large percentage of our faculty members had substantial experiences with industrial research and development before joining the Department, the education at the Department emphasizes on fundamental sciences and engineering without losing sight of industrial relevance, cultivating not only student’s analytical skill but also their hand-on capability. This fundamental and yet pragmatic education philosophy is also reflected in the Department’s funding. Over 40% of its annual funding comes from projects directly collaborating with industries.

Four Study Fields and Five Application Domains. The undergraduate and graduate programs of the Department are built upon four study fields:
    (a) Structural and Material Mechanics,
    (b) Mechanical Design and Manufacturing,
    (c) Thermo and Fluid Dynamics, and
    (d) Automatic Control
and five application domains:
    (i) Precision Machinery,
    (ii) Opto-Mechatronics,
    (iii) Nanotechnology and MEMS,
(iv) Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering, and
    (v) Energy and Environment.

Location. The University is located in Chia-Yi County in southern Taiwan with 1.5 hours travel by the high-speed train from the capital Taipei City of Taiwan.
